Low socioeconomic status (SES) is a known risk factor for early pregnancy loss and preterm birth. Lower periconceptional intake of folic acid has been associated with a greater risk of early pregnancy loss and preterm birth. We explored the association between SES and the risk of early pregnancy loss and preterm birth, with consideration of the dose-response effect of folic acid periconceptional intake. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and Global Health for articles published before May 2018. We included observational studies with SES as a factor and early pregnancy loss or preterm birth as the outcome. We identified and included eight studies, five of which reported on early pregnancy loss and three on preterm birth. SES was associated with greater risk of early pregnancy loss [pooled risk ratio (RR) 2.07, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.45-2.96] and preterm birth (pooled RR 1.22, 95% CI 1.02-1.46). Meta-regression showed that the association of SES with early pregnancy loss was stronger in North America, and preterm birth was stronger in Asia. We identified no significant SES-folic acid intake interaction on early pregnancy loss or preterm birth. The association between SES and early pregnancy loss and preterm birth is not explained by a lack of folic acid periconceptional intake.Q: Java: How to use a superclass constructor with an argument?
